Looking for a lawyer can be overwhelming. Most people start by asking for referrals from friends, family members, and other lawyers. Next, talk to the lawyer. Ask if they have handled cases like yours before. Your lawyer should be able to answer questions about their experience, timelines, fees and costs.
After speaking with them, did you feel like the lawyer listened to you and understood your issues? Was the lawyer knowledgable about your topic? Are you able to pay the fees required? (some attorneys offer payment plans) Do you feel like this is someone you can work with and trust?
It is not unusual for lawyers to fall into the habit of speaking “legalese.” If you don’t understand what they mean, ask for clarification.
